IRS is waiving tax deadlines on account of the terrorist attacks. Folks who live in or have businesses in New York City and Arlington, VA will get generous relief, as well as corporations affected by the attacks. Estimated Tax Payments due Sept. 17 can be skipped and added to the next estimate due in January. Corporations will get a similar break. Year 2000 tax returns on extension can be filed later (Feb. 12 for individual 1040s). Calendar year corporate returns that were extended until Sept. 17 are now due by Jan. 15, 2002. There will be partial relief on the failure-to-pay penalty. It won't be imposed during this extension. Tax relief for terrorism victims is sailing through Congress. Several tax breaks will apply to individuals killed in the attack, but the benefits can never fully compensate for the grief felt by the families and friends of those who senselessly died.
